This Is Not a Mask

By applying the color schemes of American comic books to the forms of traditional masks from other nations, this work highlights differences in visual literacy, where the same work is perceived either as an American character or as a cultural piece depending on one’s background. As if René Magritte’s painting of a pipe raised questions about reality and representation, I reinterpreted this project; through mixed color and shapes, it explores the visible images we see and the factors that define cultural identity.
